Getting Out And About

Research shows that being out in nature is good for our bodies and our minds.

  • Breathing lungs full of fresh air is great for our respiratory system, getting the oxygen flowing and boosting our cells, strengthening and cleansing us.

  • Soaking in some sun rays helps our bodies to make vital Vitamin D, helping our immune and nervous systems.

  • Stress reduction - Taking a break, sitting in the garden, enjoying lunch on a bench, or gardening and spending some time outdoors can have huge benefits on our emotional health.

  • In general, outside activities are better for us than exercising indoors.

A study carried out in the USA looked at the effect of nature on mental fatigue and stress. It found that being in nature helps us to relax, improves our memory, increases our attention span, and improves cognition.

And for people suffering from physical illness or mental health disorders, such as depression and anxiety, a study by the University of Derby found that interacting with nature can help people control their symptoms or even recover, alongside conventional medication:

“Nature isn’t a miracle cure for diseases, but by interacting with it, spending time in it, experiencing it and appreciating it we can reap the benefits of feeling happier and healthier as a result.”
